Generator FAQs
Everything you want to know before buying or servicing a standby generator — answered plainly.
About ESCON
What does ESCON Power Solutions install and service?
We specialize in standby generators for homes and businesses — that means the permanently installed, automatic backup systems that start on their own when the grid goes down. We handle the whole job: assessment, permitting, installation, activation, and ongoing maintenance.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We're fully licensed as an electrical contractor in Michigan and carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance on every job. If a contractor can't hand you a license number and insurance certificate, walk away.
What does "veteran-owned" actually mean for how you work?
It means we operate the way the military trained us to: show up on time, brief you clearly, execute without shortcuts, and take accountability when something isn't right. We're not a franchise — decisions get made by the same people doing the work. That's the practical difference.
Installation
How long does a generator installation take?
Most residential installations are completed in a single day once permits are approved and the gas connection is prepped. The physical install — generator pad, transfer switch, wiring, and activation — typically runs 4 to 8 hours. Permit timelines vary by municipality, generally 1 to 3 weeks. We coordinate all of it.
Do I need a permit for a standby generator?
In virtually every Michigan municipality, yes — you need an electrical permit and often a gas permit. This is not optional, and any installer who tells you permits aren't necessary is cutting a corner that could affect your homeowner's insurance and future home sale. We pull all required permits on every job.
What fuel does a standby generator use?
Standby generators run on natural gas or propane — not gasoline. If you have a utility gas line, the generator connects directly to it. If not, we install a dedicated propane tank. Either way, there's no refueling during outages, no storage cans, and the system runs indefinitely as long as fuel is available.
Will I need any electrical upgrades?
Occasionally. If your main electrical panel is at capacity or undersized, we may recommend an upgrade or a subpanel for the generator circuits. We identify anything like this during the free assessment — no surprises after you've committed.
Sizing & Cost
How much does a whole-home generator cost in Michigan?
Installed costs in Michigan typically run from $8,000 to $28,000 depending on generator size and your home's electrical setup. A 10–13 kW system covering essentials (furnace, fridge, sump pump) starts around $8,000–$11,000 installed. A full whole-home system including central AC (20–26 kW) typically runs $15,000–$20,000 installed. Use our free sizing tool for a guided estimate, or call us for a free in-home assessment with an exact quote.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want to power. A 10–13 kW unit handles the essentials most homeowners care about: furnace, sump pump, refrigerator, some lights and outlets. A 20–26 kW unit runs your whole home including central AC. The only accurate way to size a generator is a proper load calculation — not a square footage rule of thumb. We do that calculation free during every assessment. You can also get a guided estimate using our online sizing tool.
Is financing available?
Yes. Qualified customers can finance with approved credit. Ask about current terms during your free assessment — we work with lending partners to make backup power accessible without a large upfront cost.
Are estimates really free?
Completely free, no obligation. We come to your home, run the load calculation, walk the site, and give you a written recommendation with an exact installed price. You're not locked in to anything. If you decide not to move forward, there's no fee.
Service & Maintenance
Do I really need to maintain a standby generator?
Yes — and this is the part most people skip until it's too late. Standby generators sit idle for months at a time. Oil degrades, batteries lose charge, and fuel lines can gum up. The weekly self-test exercise confirms the engine starts but doesn't catch component-level issues. Annual service by a tech does. Most manufacturer warranties also require documented annual maintenance.
What brands do you service?
We service all major residential and commercial brands — Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Cummins, Champion, Honeywell, and others. You don't have to have bought from us to be on a maintenance plan.
Do you offer emergency service?
Yes. Customers on our ESCON Protect or ESCON Total maintenance plans have access to 24/7 priority emergency response. If your generator fails during an outage, we answer the phone.
What does the warranty look like?
New generator installations currently include a free 7-year warranty (limited-time offer — ask for current terms). This covers parts and labor defects beyond the manufacturer warranty. Ongoing coverage is maintained with documented annual service.
